Women Finish 2nd, Men Finish 5th at S.C. State 'Jet Johnson' Relays

ORANGEBURG, S.C. - The Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman track & field performed well against regional competition, Saturday, at the 'Jet Johnson' Relays on the campus of South Carolina State University. Leading the women's team to a second-place finish, both Ryan Sanders and Ron Danielle Williams collected golds. For the men, who finished in fifth, three different relay teams topped their fields to score heavily for B-CU.

Lady Wildcat Women

Turning in one of her better performances of the season, Ryan Sanders co-led the women's top finishers, coming in first in the 100m hurdles in the final, crossing the line at 14.58. Also in the finals for B-CU, Vanderlyn Watts came in sixth at 15.40.

Putting in the biggest scores for the Wildcats, B-CU's throwing tandem of Ron Danielle Williams and Maketa Ruffin turned in several top finishes in the throwing field events. Williams earned gold in the discus throw with a distance of 41.72m, while also earning second place in the shot put at 14.26m, and second in the javelin at 32.47m. In the same events, Ruffin wasn't far behind turning in a second-place finish in the discus at 40.52m, third in the shot put at 12.29m, and fifth in the javelin at 26.11m. The two Lady Wildcats collected a total of 44 points for the team.

In the sprint events for B-CU, the Lady Wildcats turned in several top finishes. In the 100m dash final, Nickesha Williams came in fourth in a time of 12.21 seconds. In the event preliminary, Analisa Austin finished sixth and qualified for the final with a time of 12.21, but did not finish in the final. Also in the prelims, Apple Harris came in tenth (12.41), while Alese Forbes came in thirteenth. In the 400m dash, LaShondra Wilbon turned in a fourth-place finish with a time of 58.05.

 

For the distance hurdles, Vanderlyn Watts finished third in the 400m hurdles in a time of 1:06.79. Also in the 400 hurdles, Tanekia Flowers ran a time of 1:15.50 to finish sixth.

Also another solid point source for the Lady Wildcats, several relay teams performed well, led by the middle distance teams. The 4 x 400m team (Nickesha Williams, Vanderlyn Watts, Alexandria Condell, and Asia Henry) ran a time of 3:56.81 to finish second. The 4 x 800m team (Asia Henry, Alexandria Condell, Ryan Sanders, and Jacquennee Flowers) finished second also in 10:08.13. In the short sprint relays, the 4 x 100m team finished third in a time of 46.74, while the 4 x 200m relay (Alese Forbes, Apple Harris, Asia Henry, Nickesha Williams) came in third in a season's best time of 1:43.51.

In the remaining field events, Ryan Sanders came in fourth in the high jump, with a distance of 5-02.00 ft., while also coming in fourth in the long jump with a distance of 5.34m. Also in the long jump, Nickesha Williams finished tenth (4.86m), and Analisa Austin came in fifteenth (4.42m).

The Bethune-Cookman women's team finished second overall with 113.5 points, behind meet host South Carolina State.

Wildcat Men

On the men's side of the meet, the big point source for the Wildcats was the relay teams, finishing on top in three out of four races. The 4 x 100m team (Chris Jackson, Chris Herring, Eric Cray, and Martin Embry) finished first with a time of 41.44 seconds. For the 4 x 200m (Chris Jackson, Chris Herring, Eric Cray, and Martin Embry) the team came in first with a time of 1:27.10. For the 4 x 800m (Tavares Harris, William Cosby, Derrick Taylor, and Marcell Keeling), the Wildcats finished in a time of 8:10.96 for a first-place finish. Finishing sixth in the 4 x 400m, the team (Marcell Keeling, Martin Embry, Chris Jackson, and Eric Cray) ran a time of 3:26.04.

In the sprint events, Chris Jackson led the way for the Wildcats in the 400m dash, finishing first in a time of 48.45 seconds. In the 100m dash final, Eric Cray came in third with a time of 11.06 seconds. In the 100m preliminaries, Martin Embry finished ninth (10.96), while Chris Herring finished tenth just a step behind (10.98).

In the hurdles, Demetrius Douglas-Davis topped the team, finishing tenth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:00.68. In the preliminaries of the 110m hurdles, Martin Embry came in eleventh with a time of 17.02 seconds.

In the field events, B-CU had no scoring performances, but produced three top-tier finishes. In the long jump, Johnareus Young came in tenth with a leap of 6.37m, and Nicholas Davenport jumped 6.18m to finish eleventh. For the javelin, Richard Carter finished fifteenth with a throw of 25.46m.

The men's team finished fifth overall with 51 points, just behind Savannah State University.

Next on the slate for the Wildcats, the team is working a little closer to home, heading to Jacksonville for the UNF Osprey Challenge on April 18.
